Tumblr Savior v1.1.0 Released

There’s some good news and some bad news. The good news is that I have succeeded in bending tumblr to my will and Tumblr Savior now supports the new dashboard. I actually finished it five days ago which leads me to the bad news: Google seems unable to publish extensions for Chrome in a timely manner.

Default

I submitted the new version to the Chrome Web Store 5 days ago and have heard nothing back and have no idea how many extensions are in the queue or when I can expect it to be reviewed. On March 30th, Google sent out an e-mail to developers stating that although they have multiple billions of dollars and over a hundred thousand employees they are unable to review web extensions in a timely manner.

Firefox

As a direct contrast to that, I submitted a new version of Tumblr Savior to the Firefox Add-On site while writing this post and it immediately showed me that I was in position 9 of 9 in the queue and it was published before I even finished writing this paragraph1. In the past I was frustrated by Firefox’s review process and preferred Google’s automated approach to allowing me to publish without manual intervention.

It seems like Google has taken it upon themselves to destroy the WebExtension ecosystem for their own browser. The clearest indicator that the extension system has failed at Google is the currently pinned thread on the official Chrome extensions forum entitled: Items pending review for > 3 weeks. It is a post by their “Extensions Developer Advocate” asking for people who can’t get their extensions published to remind him to do his job because his “hands are full with a bunch of other work at the moment”. Yes, we are that unimportant to Google.

With their upcoming Manifest Version 3 changes and their complete failure at maintaining the Chrome Web Store, I am extremely troubled by what the future holds for WebExtensions on Google Chrome. For my part I will be devoting more time to using and developing for Firefox.

And now you may be wondering, what about Safari? Well, the bad news is that Apple has done an even worse job than Google. Without an Apple computer I am unable to develop an extension for Safari. It also requires a $100 per year license to publish new versions and I get to pay for the file hosting myself as well. Luckily, you can use Firefox, Opera or Chrome on your Mac so you’ve got some options there.

As of this moment you can only get an updated version of Tumblr Savior for Firefox,

EDIT: I went to publish v1.1.0 to the Chrome Web Store and found out that Google silently published v1.0.0 on April 8th without notifying me. So it took them 3 days to publish. You can get Tumblr Savior for Chrome but it’s only v1.0.0 until the update gets approved which will take ??? days.
